Books
There are various books that are recommended as supplemental reading while learning Tai Chi. Enjoy!
- Tao Te Ching – Stephen Mitchell, a beautiful translation of this central Taoist text, ascribed to Lao-tzu, the traditional founder of Taoism.
- Art of War – Sun Tzu, a classical book on warfare. The Art of War has many specific battle strategies and advisements. It stresses preparation for battle above all, including planning around climate and battle terrain, studying the enemy’s movements and weaknesses, and proper training of soldiers. Although many of the students being taught at Tai Chi Brit are not going into battle or a bar fight, the main battle is with oneself, hence its inclusion here.
- There Are No Secrets: Professor Cheng Man Ch’ing and His T’ai Chi Chuan – by Wolfe Lowenthal. This was the first Tai Chi book Sifu Antony read as a newbie student. It captures the excitement of learning Tai Chi and gives insight into what this practice is all about.
- Walking On Air: Tai Chi Life Practice – Nzazi Malonga and Deviyana Livneh. Written by Sifu Antony’s teacher and fellow student. A wonderful book going deep into what it means to study Tai Chi.
- Breathe: Qi Gong Practice for Self Healing and Wellbeing – Nzazi Malonga and Deviyana Livneh. Another book by the same authors covering the ‘Iron Shirt Qi Gong Series’.
Uniform
A number of students have asked for a recommendation on where to buy their uniform, or ‘Gi’. This is a great option. It is $66 + shipping at the time of writing. The suit is made with good quality linen and the one that Sifu wears in class. Please opt for the black option so that all the students in the school look… uniform.
You can also buy Tai Chi shoes, although practicing in bare feet is optimal. This style of shoe have no rise in them. Most modern shoes have a 4mm rise in the heel which means you are constantly slightly compensating when you stand. You could opt for something like this. $15.75 from Amazon + shipping.
